This tale tells of a love story between the seventh fairy and the woodcutter O Quy Ho, the eldest son of the mountain god Ai Lao, is where the name “Love Waterfall” comes from.

According to folklore, the fairy played and had a bath in the Love waterfall before dusk in order to make her way back to heaven. However, she became so absorbed in listening to the woodcutter O Quy Ho’s flute that she forgot how to go back. O Quy Ho, the woodcutter, was gifted with the bamboo flute and had a strong love for the outdoors despite being the descendant of a mountain god. His father transformed him into a normal individual since he refused to carry on his father’s legacy.

The seventh fairy comes to Earth every day to hide from her parents, chat with and watch Ho play the flute. Although their love blossomed, the Jade Emperor disapproved of it. Ho was magically transformed into a black turtle that had been silent for a millennium on the top of the pass near the Love Waterfall, and the fairy was barred from ever returning to Earth (currently the top of O Quy Ho pass).

The fairy eventually got sick and died, but she never stopped missing the music of Ho’s flute even after she had gone back to heaven. After her death, she turned into a phoenix, which she flew over the pass every day, calling Mr. Ho’s name with great fervor, O Quy Ho! O Quy Ho!.

The other waterfall is named Love waterfall in remembrance of the love story. People heard that mournful call and assumed it was the name of the highest point of O Quy Ho pass (Hoang Lien Son pass) today.
